Hey Kids!
You must be wondering why the title is " Celebrating Pi Approximation Day"! And this question must have popped up in your mind "what is Pi by the way?" So, here's a short conversation between Eager Esha and Smart Sarah for you to understand "What is Pi":
Eager Esha: So how should we measure the length of the circle? Smart Sarah: Easy peasy, remember that day when our teacher taught us about a constant called "Pi"? Eager Esha: Yeah!!! We measure it with the help of a thread. [they measure the length(circumference) of the circle with the help of a thread.]
Eager Esha: And the length is 26.7cm. Smart Sarah: Let's measure the diameter...and it's 8.5cm. Eager Esha: Now if we divide the length by diameter (26.7/8.5). Smart Sarah: We get the number 3.14(approx.). Eager Esha: And we celebrate this day...umm...I mean the ratio. Smart Sarah: Since the approximate value of 'Pi' is 22/7, Pi Approximation Day is celebrated every year on 22nd July, symbolizing the numerator 22 with the date and denominator 7 with the month. Eager Esha and Smart Sarah: hope our explanation was helpful! Thank you Eager Esha and Smart Sarah for the explanation... This magical constant was not only created by one person but many other people at different timings and different locations. The famous Indian Mathematician and Astronomer Aryabhatta gave the approximate value of 'Pi' as 3.1416 more than 4700 years ago, then the value of Pi was calculated by Archimedes in 200 BC, and is also said that this mathematical constant was found by a little known Mathematics teacher William Jones from Wales in 1706. I was always curious about this number and wanted to do something new on this day. So, this year thought of creating a space for all mathematicians of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani where they can post their creative work related to Mathematics. This blog will depict all activities conducted by the Maths Club of the School.
