CELEBRATION OF Pi (π) APPROXIMATION DAY, 2020

“Maths is Fun, Explore, Express, Enjoy and then Experience the Fun of Learning Mathematics.”

We at Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani give an opportunity to our students to Experience the fun of learning by doing and exploring the facts themselves.

Pi (π), the most famous & mysterious constant in Maths And Physics, the number which you get when you divide the circumference of a Circle by its diameter, seems to be a Rational Number but still taken as Irrational Number is represented by the symbol ‘π’. The students are always eager to know more about this wonderful number.

Celebration of Pi Approximation Day on July 22 gave this opportunity and the students explored many facts about Pi (π) and to assess their investigations a quiz was conducted, and the result was very encouraging.

Some of the facts explored by students are shared here:

  1. Pi is all-encompassing: In its endless stream of digits, Pi is believed to contain the numbers 0 through 9 in every conceivable combination, forming every possible string of digits. Your phone number, social security number, ATM code and every other string of numbers you can imagine are in there somewhere.

  2. Pi is ancient:, The numerical relationship between the circumference of a circle and its diameter has been contemplated since antiquity, though the name pi was given in the 18th century The symbol π was first used to denote the circumference-to-diameter ratio in 1706 by Welsh mathematician William Jones, but in the 1730s, Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler adopted its use and made it famous.

  3. We’ve used computers to calculate pi to more than 22 trillion digits.

  4. Humans have memorized vast stretches of pi: In 2015, Suresh Kumar Sharma, a former vegetable vendor from Jaipur, India (he’s now a memory coach), set a world record when he successfully recited more than 17,000 digits of pi — a feat that took 17 hours to complete.

  5. Pi Day celebrated on March 14: The day depicts the decimal approximation value of π = 3.14. Also, March 14 is Albert Einstein’s birthday. And Physicist Stephen Hawking — considered by some to be Einstein’s intellectual successor — died on March 14, 2018.

Pi Approximation Day celebrated on July 22:

The day depicts the approximate value of π = 22/7.
